King’s Mattress and the Wild, Wild World Of Mattress
Retailing!
Passion. A single word that encapsulates the business philosophy
of Aaron Zarling who along with his wife Celeste, own and run
King’s Mattress. A true entrepreneur, Aaron who at the age of 21
started his first business (a roof cleaning company) opened the
first King’s Mattress in Everett during the Fourth of July
weekend 2003. An entrepreneur herself, Celeste who has always
been involved with the business, came aboard full time one year
ago.
Having recently opened their fourth and newest location in
Lynnwood, the Zarlings use quirky husband and wife television
commercials as their theme. Competing with a number of other
mattress retailers including market leaders Sleep Country and
Macy’s, King’s Mattress is focused on offering top name brands
like Sealy and Simmons at prices that compete with or beat the
competition and in an atmosphere that makes the customer feel at
ease.
“The mattress business is very competitive, but we think we can
win over the consumer by offering more of a family-oriented
sales experience. Some of the big chain mattress stores use a
pretty hard sell approach like some auto dealers and we think
people are tired of that,” says co-owner, Aaron Zarling.
According to Aaron’s wife and business partner, Celeste Zarling,
women are the key; “We want Moms, like me, to be comfortable
coming into our stores to find a mattress for themselves, for
their kids or for their guest room. There shouldn’t be any big
chain sales pressure.”
The Zarlings television commercials reflect a fun husband-wife
sitcom relationship. Celeste plays the typical levelheaded wife
and Aaron fills the roll of the crazy over-the-top husband. The
banter between them starts each commercial followed by a more
traditional sales message. By using humor and creating
characters easily related to, the Zarlings create a sense of
familiarity in their marketing that many retailers miss out on.
King’s Mattress, with retail locations in Tukwila, Redmond,
Everett and Lynnwood, and a warehouse location in Woodinville,
is run like an old fashioned family business, with both Aaron
and Celeste visiting the stores on a daily basis. When asked
about long-term goals, Zarling says he would like to open four
more locations over the next five years in Western Washington.
